Why WAV files are so big
A WAV file stores raw PCM samples: every fraction of a second of audio is written out uncompressed. At CD quality that is 44,100 samples per second, 16 bits each, across two channels — about 10 MB per minute. A three-minute song lands around 30 MB, and a 48 kHz 24-bit studio export is roughly half again as large.
What you gain by converting to MP3
Expect roughly a 90 percent reduction. A 30 MB WAV becomes a 4 MB MP3 at 192 kbps, which is the difference between a file that will not attach to an email and one that will, or between an album that overflows a phone and one that fits comfortably. The trade-off is that MP3 discards some detail, so keep the original WAV as your archive copy and treat the MP3 as the version you share and play.
